The Importance of Emotional Intelligence

According to Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and those of the people around you. There are 5 key elements of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills.

Self-awareness

Ability to recognize your emotions and how they affect your behaviors.

Ability to recognize your strengths and weaknesses.

You self-reflect and are honest with yourself.

Self-regulation

Ability to control reactions to emotions.

How well are you able to control your emotions when put in a high-stress situation? Do you crack under pressure?

Motivation

Intrinsic motivation: motivated by things beyond fame, money and recognition.

Has the ability to self-motivate.

Focus on achieving inner goals.

Empathy

Understanding other peoples’ thoughts, views, and feelings

Social skills

The skills needed to handle and influence other people’s emotions effectively

Social skills include communication skills, building bonds, persuasion and influencing skills, team-working skills
